My Paper Heart
Magan Vernon
Release Date: August 1st, 2012
( Barnes & Noble / Amazon )
There are worse things in life than failing out of college- such as having your parents receive the letter that you’ve been kicked out.
Now to appease her parents self-proclaimed sorority princess Libby Gentry is packing up her Prada bag and heading to work for her great aunt’s antique store in tiny Elsbury, Louisiana. She’s pretty sure she can tackle the swamp and deal with her great aunt and tom boy of a little cousin, but what she doesn’t know is if she can handle the local town playboy, Blaine Crabtree.

As Libby's feelings for Blaine grow, so does her need for acceptance and all of the insecurities she has kept inside are coming out. She may have survived the Louisiana swamp, but she may not survive Blaine's reluctance to say the 'L' word. When Blaine finally commits to the three words Libby’s been waiting for, she only hopes they haven’t come too late.

**This book does contain some mild language and sexual content. It is meant for upper YA readers**

:Review:
I wasn't sure what to expect when going into reading My Paper Heart. I have never read a book by Magan Vernon before but once I read the synopsis and saw that it was going to be classified as New Adult I knew I had to give this book a shot.

Libby isn't you typical blonde bimbo. Well, from the looks of it I guess you can say she is... flunking out of college after her first year and the sorority she was apart of could very well make you think she is a nothing more than a sorority girl with money who didn't give a rats a** to wither she passed or failed. But when her parents are more than peeved that she wasted a full year of college she is sent packing to her Great Aunts in Louisiana for a little wake up call.

I thoroughly enjoyed Libby. She was hilarious and the more you get to know her the more you know she isn't the blonde bimbo everyone in her sorority though she was. She is hilarious and along the way find herself amongst the southern charm she was so against when she was sent away. I love the connection she forged with her cousin Brittany and it really helped the reader see that Libby is way more than meets the eye. And don't you dare get me started on Blaine. Ladies, Blaine is that sexy southern man that we all dream about, not to mention completely and totally hilarious in everything he says. Swoon!

There wasn't a major WOW factor for me in how this book was delivered or finished, but I did enjoy how I got my complete ending. That is the one thing that pushes me away from books now a days, especially indie books. Finishing way too soon and with not enough substance. But this book hit the nail on the head and ended great. If you are looking for something that isn't too smexy and just the right amount of swoonage then I MUST suggest that you pick this read up. I know you ladies will fall for Blaine just the way I did. ; ]

Review: Lies Beneath [Lies Beneath #1] by Anne Greenwood Brown

Lies Beneath [Lies Beneath #1]
Published by: Delacorte Press
Anne Greenwood Brown
Release Date: June 12th 2012
( Barnes & Noble / Goodreads )
Calder White lives in the cold, clear waters of Lake Superior, the only brother in a family of murderous mermaids. To survive, Calder and his sisters prey on humans, killing them to absorb their energy. But this summer the underwater clan targets Jason Hancock out of pure revenge.

They blame Hancock for their mother's death and have been waiting a long time for him to return to his family's homestead on the lake. Hancock has a fear of water, so to lure him in, Calder sets out to seduce Hancock's daughter, Lily. Easy enough—especially as Calder has lots of practice using his irresistible good looks and charm on unsuspecting girls.

Only this time Calder screws everything up: he falls for Lily—just as Lily starts to suspect that there's more to the monsters-in-the-lake legends than she ever imagined. And just as his sisters are losing patience with him.

Thoughts/Review:

I have come to be a HUGE fan of NetGalley and all its wonders. Thanks to them and Random House publishing I was lucky enough to get my hands on this debut book From Anne Greenwood Brown. Let me tell you, mermaids [or should I say mermen] have never looked so good, or so absolutely creepy. I have not read that many mermaid books and I fell head over fins for this. Deception and revenge. Two words I feel fit perfectly with this story. You get plenty of both and then some. But that’s not all that awaits you in these pages.

I really enjoyed the fact that we got the story from Calder [a sexy alluring merman] and not from one of his sisters. Because typically that is what I see when I browse mermaid books, so it was a nice little change. But once I cracked open [well, touched open] this book I was hooked.  You get a feel for Calder and all of his uniqueness before you see what mermaids really like to do. I was kind of freaked out by Maris and Pavati, though his third sister Tallulah seemed to have a control on her craziness. See, mermaids are not all nice and pretty, they are deadly beautiful and won’t hesitate to suck your happiness [and soul] away. [Sounds a little like dementors right?!] And they have their sights set on revenge, with or without Calder’s help.

The love story in this book was nothing short of amazing. I really enjoyed Calder and Lily’s relationship for one fact only. He thought he was smooth and would get her to fall for him right away, and all he did was creep her out. You know, eventually Lily succumbed to her feelings for Calder, but I thought that was great. Lily was strong, determined, and forceful. I loved how surprising she was from page to page and I completely understand how Calder was so enthralled by her. As I kept reading, I was entranced in the words on the page and what was going on. Anne writing is so detailed that I couldn’t help but feeling like I was right there. There were gasps, screeching, yelling and some punching of a pillow. Anne had no trouble extracting my emotions from this story.

Reading this story unfold was nothing short of thrilling. I was surprised, pissed, giddy, and so much more. Anne Greenwood Brown has successfully captured me in her tangled web of words and I can’t wait to read more of Lily and Calder’s story. This story packs a punch and an action packed ending that will leave you with such a craving for the next book, you may take a bite out of someone near you. So yeah, don't say I didn't warn you folks!

Thoughts/Review:
If I told you that I was pleasantly surprised by this book I would be lying. I was blow away by my first Sophia Duane book and had to use more than a few tissues to control my stream of tears. Since I went into this book only reading the synopsis and no reviews I wasn’t sure what I would get. But once I flipped the last page, I can tell you that I got one the most bittersweet stories I have ever had the privilege of reading. Now since I immensely enjoyed this book, I want to offer you the same privilege.  As in, I will not go into incredibly detail as to why I love this book so much, I just hope you can get a feel of this wonderful story and choose to read it yourselves.

This is a very personal emotional journey for Adam [our MC]. He is the youngest [by only a few minutes] to his twin Aaron and lacking in the conversational talent that his brother so easily has. Adam is more of an introverted band ‘geek’ who likes to keep to himself and stay off the radar of anyone in the halls of his high school. These two twins couldn’t be further from each other as far as social status come, but as brothers they are as close as conjoined twins. Always knowing when the other is down or hurt and always being able to confide in one another. But when the spirited and bold Olivia moves next door, everything between them changes. Fate is never fair. Nor are two brothers with a crush.

Okay, so that is a fair summary, I could add a trillion things to it spice it up but PEOPLE! This book kept me on my toes the ENTIRE time. I thank that largely to the fact that I didn’t read any reviews going into this. I want you to feel that crush build in your heart, the blood boiling under your skin with rage, and most of all I want you to feel the gut wrenching pain that is falling in love. Yes pain, because love isn’t always pretty and it defiantly doesn’t always have a happy ending. But it helps you grow, pushes you, and sometimes you end up finding yourself in the aftermath.

If you haven’t noticed by now, I LOVE this book. Sophia Duane is an amazing author capable of bringing out every emotion in you and then some. This was also Sophia’s first Young Adult book and she pulled it off flawlessly. Somewhere between the infectious characters and the shocking, jaw dropping craziness that is this ending I fell in love. With the characters, with the story, with the message, and most of all, I fell in love with the epilogue. I just want you all to know, I have a new author on my favorite list. If you are looking for an emotional journey with a pit stop in angst then you need to pick up My Only by Sophia Duane. Oh, and don’t forget your box of tissues.

Thoughts/Review:
As a huge fan of the Jenny Pox trilogy I couldn’t wait to read the first book in J.L. Bryan’s newest series.  Though it is aimed at a younger audience than the Jenny Pox trilogy was, I loved it no less.  One thing I that caught my eye [or ear] the most was the huge aspect the music played in this story. It was incredible to see what a little fairy magic could do to a group of kids. This story is a fast paced read you can’t put down until all is said and done. But be ready for an ending that will leave you hanging in the best possible way.

Just like in his previous books, falling for J.L. Bryan’s characters was an easy feat. Right as the book opened up I knew I was going to love Jason. I mean, how could you not like someone writing a love song for the person he is pining over?! Then once the whole band [who are named The Assorted Zebras by the way] was introduced I was a goner. Each and every character made me crack up in one way or another and I just loved watching the relationship that Jason and Erin did have develop. But what really got this story going was Jason’s little sister Katie [whom I adored!] and his journey into Faerie World. The descriptive writing that J.L. provides us with was so fun to read while he was discovering Faerie.

Another thing I thought was really nifty about this book were the few chapters told from the Fairy’s point of view. You know, the Fairy that Jason stole the instruments from? I wasn’t expecting this but it was interesting to see what she went through after Jason just nabbed her instruments and ran. You also got a lot more background on the faerie world that J.L. had built and I have a feeling it will all come together even more in book two. While I am talking about Faerie World, I can’t tell you how much I loved Grizlemor  [who is a Goblin]. He is the one who opened up Jason’s eyes to the world of the Fae and man he had me rolling. I don’t think I have ever enjoyed a dirty goblin more, if ever.

Overall this book is a fun ride to get lost in. Though I despised Jason’s parents I loved everyone else that graced the pages of this musical journey. J.L. Bryan’s witty remarks and fun dialog keep the book moving along and by the time you are on the last page it just doesn’t seem possible. Like I said before, be ready for this ending! You will be surprised at how fast you actually read the book and will be left saying ‘What?! Really?! Where is book two?! I need it NOW!’ I can’t wait to see how Jason’s world will continue to warp in the coming books, and I highly suggest you find out what The Assorted Zebras are all about.

Thoughts/Review:
Holy goddess! Talked about a freaking thrill ride!! This fantastic debut novel from M.R. Merrick does much more than just provide an afternoon of reading, it provides a nights worth of action and adventure that you just can not pull yourself away from. Right from the start Merrick doesn't waste any time letting you get a taste of his own paranormal world full of demons, vampires, warlocks and witches the likes of which you have never seen. You won't want to put this one down once you pick it up people, so be ready for a late night and get ready to have some amazing characters attach themselves to your heart.

First off, I would like to say that Merrick has quite a way with words. Everything in this book flowed from one scene to the next with the most amazing detail I felt like it was literally in my living room. It still amazes me how people can write about the same thing as so many others have before them and manage to make it completely their own, and so freaking wonderful. The one thing that I loved the most with this book was the characters that Merrick filled it with. From Chase, the fiery exile who is just trying to find his way to Rayna, the half-breed that manages to keep a mysterious cloud over herself the whole book. Oh and you can not forget about Willy!! He holds a special place in my heart, and I am sure you will fall for him too. I mean how could you not?!

Not only did I love how this story was told in Chases POV [I mean really, you don't get many male main characters in YA do you?!] but I loved how Chases and Raynas relationship was. There was little to no romance in this book but I felt [maybe it is me wishing] that it could lead there. So this book was a great way to build up trust between each other which was done incredibly well. The banter between these two had me cracking up, and seeing them battle together was even better. The drew strength from each other and have this weird bond that I fell in love with. I can not wait to see what Merrick has in store for these two in book number two of this series.

I know this review is a bit vague, but people, this is one of those books you have to read and discover for yourself to get the full experience. I mean, I went into this book seeing all the 5 star reviews and knew there was something amazing buried in the pages but nothing compares to actually reading it. The ending had me tearing up and wondering how the heck there were no more pages for me to flip. To say that I am eagerly awaiting book two is a grave understatement. Oh, and once you buy it, be careful. You may get whiplash from all the action this books brings you. You have been warned.

Thoughts/Review:
When I was approved to read and review this book through NetGalley I was more than excited. First off, the cover is just like pure beauty is it not? I have a thing for the color red I think. Secondly the blurb caught my attention right away. I love the whole angel theme, and this was a great little twist from other angel books out there. This book wasted no time catching your attention and hurling you into all the action. From page one it was like Heather Burch is telling you hold on to your seat, this is going to be one insane ride and it really is. From the characters whom you grow extremely attached to the insane plot that is driving the story, there is no time to calm down and gather yourself. You have to keep pushing through so you can understand it all, and quench the thirst the book leaves you with. Because trust me, this book leaves you hanging in so many ways.

One thing that I didn't enjoy with this book was after the incredible first two chapters you have so much information thrown at you and then loose site of where the book is going. I was sort of drifting in and out of this book for the first half. I knew a great story was there, I felt it in my bones, but I was just coming up short. It was page 179 that started really hitting it off with me. After you get to a certain point it starts to slow down and you finally see the world of this book come together. Once I hit it that groove I could NOT put this book down. I loved the characters even more than before and started to put together the puzzle pieces I had gotten earlier. This is no easy puzzle to put together though folks, the Halflings world is a crazy piece of literary genius.

Like any great YA book nowadays there was one hell of a love triangle. You have the bad boy Raven and the good hearted Mace. Now I loved them both, I really did, but I definitely had my favorite. [*cough* Raven *cough*] The thing with this love triangle is that no matter who she chooses, she could never be with either one. It put a huge damper on my heart when certain things happened and left me clinching my chest for the boys I had grown to love. Nikki was seriously a breath of fresh air in this book. She was strong, knew how to hold her own, and didn't let others get to her. She was far from heartless though, and the depth of her emotions is what really endeared her to me. I wanted the book to never end, I needed to know what happened to her and her fight to figure out what was going on around her.

The ending half of this book was my favorite, like I said, I honestly could not put it down. I was so attached to everyone at this point that I didn't want to let them go. As I kept flipping the last few pages I kept hoping the page numbers would somehow double because the ending in this book is killer. KILLER I tell you! I don't want to spoil it for anyone out there but be ready to pre-order the second book in this series, because you will HAVE to. After the last page I sat stunned in my chair for a good 20 minutes. I couldn't believe it just ended that way, no doubt Heather Burch knows how to keep her readers hooked. So, if you are asthmatic [like me] make sure to keep your rescue inhaler close because this book is going to take your breath away. This was definitely a great debut book and I will be keeping an eye out for the second to this dazzling series.

Summary:
Internet romance. In this day and age it is nothing we haven't seen before. The same goes for internet messages boards for our favorite shows, we have all been there and done that and well, to be honest, we all still do it. When you don't feel like anyone else knows you, there is someone out there on web that does. So when 18 year old Imogen [or Immy for short] grows attached to a new show that highlights a romance between two women she takes to a fan message board for Lovers & Sinners, hoping to meet others with the same love of the show she has. It has nothing to do with her fancying the two main women on the show, I mean, you can't be into a girl when you are so obviously straight right? Even if Immy doesn't feel much when she is with Matt[her emo band boyfriend], her best friends Beth and Emily don't let her forget what a catch he is, she should totally be head over heels for him. Every girl is.

So why does Immy start to question everything once she meets Fickle on the boards and starts chating over MSN with her? Why is she getting feelings she doesn't even get from Matt when Fickle starts flirting with her? Questioning her own sexuality Immy confides in another girl she has gotten closer to from the message boards named Joey. Figuring out she might not even be straight Immy is left with a choice. Stick to what is expected, or take a huge leap into the unknown. But Immy is about to find out that not all risks are so great and sometimes you end up finding yourself in the most unexpected of places.

Thoughts:
This is one of those books that just instantly caught my eye while browsing around goodreads one night. Lucky for me I found it on NetGalley and got approved to read it and was ready to jump into it as soon as I downloaded it. I didn't know what to expect from it but as soon as I started it I hit one roadblock. Be ready for some major British slang! Now, at first, I had no idea what the heck some of the sayings were. As the story progressed I pretty much had it figured out and it became very endearing and I actually enjoyed it. I am so use to reading American writers that sometimes it is nice to get a taste of something I am not use to, and it kinda rubbed off on me. It really helped set the story and more so, helped me envision my characters and setting that much more.

The characters in this book were nothing short of amazing. I loved the leading lady Immy and her best friends Emily and Beth. Immy was one of those characters that you just get behind and she went through so many questions and nerve wracking experiences and I felt it along with her. You get to see not only Immy grow into herself, but you get to see her build her relationship up with her friends, who are so welcoming to Immy finding herself. Then you have the two internet ladies that catch Immy in a whirlwind. Fickle, well, is fickle and the biggest flirt you will ever see. While Joey is the most lovable person ever, and she never failed to make me smile. But I have to say, the one thing that really did it for me in this book was how it was narrated.

You are solely in Immy's head, yet a lot of the dialog in this book is in the form of MSN messages. Now, I was a huge MSN messenger fan back in the day and it made the book move that much faster for me. The over the top flirting Fickle pulls is more believable in that sense and the growing relationships with Joey over MSN just clicks more. Most people are freaked about meeting people online but this book shows that sometimes you can create a stronger relationship starting off online than you could in person and with this situation of Immy finding out she isn't straight, it helped her become more comfortable in her own skin with help from others who have been through the same thing. It just shows that there is support out there from people who have had the same problems, you just have to reach out.

This book really grabbed my heart and I was so glad that the ending tied up happily, because that is all I wanted for Immy throughout this whole book. Watching a woman who never felt like she was right finding out that she just never discovered who she truly was, it kinda took my breath away. There is nothing better than reading something that empowers young people everywhere to embrace their true selves, because being happy is the most important thing to have in life. This book fell together perfectly and Immy's journey was one I will read over and over. I know I will be keeping a look out for more books by KE Payne in the future, she is brilliant, and now I know all this awesome British slang. [:
